Cowboys hit with a bucket of cold water right before Sunday Night Football vs. Vikings: 3 takeaways from early games
What we learned about the Dallas Cowboys’ path to the NFL playoffs from Week 15’s early slate of games.
The Dallas Cowboys play on Sunday Night Football, but we already learned a lot about their long-shot road to the playoffs thanks to Week 15’s early slate of games.
Let’s dive into the three biggest takeaways from the noon window leading up to the primetime matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, starting with the sad reality the Cowboys’ biggest NFC East rival reminded us of.
Eagles hit Cowboys with a bucket of cold water
The Cowboys are barely alive in the playoff race. The Philadelphia Eagles are resting their quarterback for a full quarter in Week 15 during a shutout win over the Las Vegas Raiders. They’re not the same. Talk about a bucket of cold water for Dallas, which now needs to win out, and the Eagles to lose two of their next three.
Now granted, the Raiders beating the Eagles was always going to be a long shot. But Philly playing dominant ball on both sides is what should be the biggest concern. After all, the Eagles need to have a full-on collapse to drop the NFC East. Sunday’s squad didn’t look like a team on the brink of such a disaster. But then again, it was the Raiders with a backup quarterback. Let’s see what they look like next week.
Cowboys’ next rival looks sharp
It wasn’t pretty at all, but the Chargers are still a dangerous team despite a seriously banged-up offensive line. They went into Arrowhead against a desperate Chiefs team and walked away with their 10th win of the season. When it comes to the Cowboys’ need to win out, the game against the Chargers next week could be the biggest roadblock.
The Chargers’ defense sacked Patrick Mahomes four times and didn’t allow a single Chiefs’ playmaker to go over 50 receiving yards. It’s a stingy unit that hits hard and plays physical. The Cowboys will be challenged next weekend.
Commanders’ win is (kind of) encouraging
If the Eagles are going to lose two of their next three, the Commanders will need to step up at least once, as they’re set to play each other twice before the end of the regular season. On Sunday, Washington snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 29-21 win over the New York Giants.
And yet, I can’t say they looked like a football team ready to take on the Eagles a week from now. Giants’ receivers were open most of the game but dropped multiple good passes from Jaxson Dart. I don’t expect Philly to make those mistakes.
