The Denver Broncos need one win to get into the playoffs. With a game against the Cincinnati Bengals coming up, a team that is also trying desperately to win this weekend. The Broncos had the chance to do that last week against the Los Angeles Chargers but failed miserably.
This weekend, that can't happen. Their last game of the year is against the Kansas City Chiefs who may sit everyone, so, they do have a bit of breathing room. Regardless, they may as well try and handle their business now rather than later.
So, we talked to a Bengals expert, our very own A to Z Sports' Cincinnati writer John Sheeran to get an inside look at the Bengals. Here are four burning questions about Cincy:
Broncos vs. Bengals burning questions
The Broncos have had trouble getting a run game going. They have three RBs, sometimes four, that get carries all game long. They started strong against the Chargers but that died down. How do you see this run game faring against the Bengals run D?
Denver’s offensive line should be a mismatch for Cincinnati’s defensive front in this one. It’s just not a good unit to survive all day against the run, and we’re a few months away from the defense as a whole being overhauled. The left-side duo of Quinn Meinerz and Garett Bolles should have little trouble controlling the line of scrimmage, no matter which running back has the rock.
We have talked about it before, but with how good this Broncos' defensive line is getting to the passer, how do you see them faring with the way the Bengals' offensive line has been playing?
Cincinnati should be fine on the edge since it looks like tackles Orlando Brown Jr. and Amarius Mims might be back together again back. Brown’s last game in Week 13 ended poorly because he wasn’t yet 100%. If he’s finally himself again, then Nik Bonitto will have a good challenge to overcome. Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers will have real opportunities against a terrible guard duo in Alex Cappa and Cordell Volson. Those two are the true threats toward stifling this offense.
We all know who Joe Burrow is, and how great he can be. But, it feels like he isn’t being talked about enough. Is he having a down year? Is it because the team isn’t as successful?
Remember how I said the defense will be overhauled pretty soon? Burrow is having anything but a down year. He’d be right in the MVP conversation with another two wins on his record. The Bengals’ offense has been nearly perfect against good teams, but total perfection has been required to win thanks to a defense that resides at the bottom of the NFL. It’s truly unlike anything in the league right now, and Burrow’s best season as a pro has been wasted because of it.
Who is one player the Broncos' offense needs to know about on the Bengals' defense, a unit that has struggled a bit this year?
Free safety Geno Stone was one of the worst members of this maligned Bengals’ defense through the first 12 games of the year. He’s played significantly better over these last three games, and an interception in each game has definitely helped with that. He’s playing more confidently and making plays he’s expected to make. Bo Nix needs to be aware of where he is in the secondary.
Bengals vs Broncos Expert’s Take: Joe Burrow needs to be on high alert against Denver’s defense
Burrow and the Bengals face one of the toughest defenses on their schedule this week.
