The Denver Broncos, once again, lost on a last-second field goal. The Los Angeles Chargers are atop the AFC West after a last-second victory over Denver in Week 3.

Penalties killed the Broncos on multiple drives, leaving them in a poor position to succeed. Immediately after the game, quarterback Bo Nix spoke to the media with a personal message on the loss, while discussing what the team needs to do moving forward to be successful.

Nix was asked if it felt similar failing to put a team away late and losing heartbreakingly once again. The talented signal-caller didn’t hold back with his response.

“Felt very similar, felt like we kept going backwards,” Nix said. “We had no explosives when we needed them, had the ball with a chance. That drive just felt like we didn’t do anything. Felt like we just kept going backwards and having long field positions and long third downs. In this league, it’s not going to cut it.”

Denver had 10 penalties for 90 yards in the contest, stalling out drives and giving them poor field position all day. Despite the miscues, the game was in reach for Denver.

Nix finished his day going 14-of-25 with 153 yards and a touchdown. While he limited his turnovers, it just wasn’t quite enough for the team to walk out of Los Angeles with a victory.

For the penalties, Nix wasn’t too sure exactly what the calls were, but that the team needs to limit them moving forward.

Head coach Sean Payton shared a similar sentiment during his press conference after the loss: the team needs to clean up some things and fast. Nix was asked specifically about the penalty calls and what the team is doing moving forward.

“Honestly, not sure exactly. Not really paying attention to even what they are,” Nix said. “Just know we’re going backwards. Our coaches will handle that. I just know, an offside on the offense, never really knew that was possible, to be honest with you. Those things, we just have to fix. Accountability is on us that we’ll fix them; we just can’t have that happen.”

Nix opens up on the loss and the future of the Denver Broncos

Denver has to move on quickly from the loss with an upcoming ‘Monday Night Football’ showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Nix was asked how a loss like this weighs on him, and how to prioritize on the upcoming game while not dwelling on the mistakes in back-to-back weeks that cost them both games.

“It stinks, it’s definitely not fun, not enjoyable,” Nix said. “All you can do is go to the next game. I’ve never been able to figure out how to go back and change anything yet; still working on that. I think the most important thing is that we’ve got a long season ahead of us. Instead of going back and changing things, all we can do is move forward and change them in the future, and do things differently, and find a way to not let these close games fall in another team’s hands.”

Nix’s top wide receiver, Courtland Sutton, was electric throughout the contest. He finished his day with six receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown.

However, multiple times in the game, Nix had missed some of his receivers for would-be touchdowns. Short with his response, the signal-caller explained why he couldn’t connect on some of the bigger plays of the game.

“Looks like the common thread is just being a step too far and not hitting him,” Nix said.

The signal-caller was asked about the consistency with the offense. Another short response from the quarterback, clearly ready to move on from the devastating loss and onto the Bengals.

“I’m not sure. I don’t know, we’d score every drive if I knew,” Nix said.

Despite the miscues, Denver had a chance to walk out of Los Angeles with a victory. Instead, penalties, missed opportunities, and another last-second defeat have Denver looking for answers. With a primetime matchup against the Bengals looming, Nix and Payton understand that the margin for error has nearly been eliminated.

If Denver wants to keep its season on track, those “backward” moments that Nix referred to must be fixed.
