The Denver Broncos have an X-Factor for the 2023 season that is someone you may not have thought of. 2022 was bad, and 2-23 has the potential to be much better, but they will need an X-Factor.
Every team has an X-Factor or a guy that is a variable in a given situation that could significantly impact the outcome. For the Broncos, you could choose several guys to hold down that title. The biggest one is Russell Wilson because you don't know what will happen. However, he is smaller of an X-Factor this year than Sean Payton.
The Broncos' new head coach, and the guy that is expected to turn this franchise around, is the X-Factor. Here is what CBS Sports said about Payton being the Denver Broncos' X-Factor.
Denver Broncos: HC Sean Payton The big question here is whether Russell Wilson can bounce back or if what we've seen from him over the past two seasons is the new normal. Nobody will have a greater effect on the answer to that question than Payton. Will he be able to get Russ to change his style of play, and go with the flow of the system? If not, the Broncos might be looking for a new quarterback as soon as next offseason. – Jared Dubin, CBS Sports
Payton is the X-Factor because he is in charge of turning around Russell Wilson. Payton has turned franchises around before in the New Orleans Saints; now he has to turn around Wilson, similarly to what he did with Drew Brees.
Payton's job will be challenging. We saw how bad Wilson was in 2022 when he was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league. Now, Payton has to manage all of that.
Luckily for Payton, it will get easier if he can get Wilson to buy into his system. The offensive system that Payton wants to run will be better for Wilson. He wants to run the ball a lot with a lot of 21 personnel. He wants the running game to set up the deep ball downfield. The offense will be similar to what Pete Carroll did in Seattle, which is where Wilson was his best.
But Payton has to get all of that to work, which is why he is the biggest X-Factor in 2023.
