The Denver Broncos certainly outplayed their expectations in 2024, thanks partly to the solid play from 2024 first-round pick quarterback Bo Nix.
After seeing Nix play and earning a playoff spot, the team must make the moves necessary to build on that success in 2025. One need on their roster they should address is tight end, and head coach Sean Payton may have shared a major hint about the type of player they could target at that position.
Broncos put higher priority on pass-catching ability for TE prospects early in the draft
During Payton's availability at the combine, he was asked how important it is for a tight end to excel as both a blocker and a pass catcher if they are going to use a high draft pick on that position. Here is what he had to say: "You generally don't get both (blocking and pass-catching) out of college, and I say that respectfully. I'll ask the scouts as they are reading the player they usually do one really well, and the other is just okay. I think historically speaking, it's been a little easier to take the receiving tight end and work with him on his technique relative to run blocking than it is to the run blocking tight end and make him a really good receiver."
TE has been a popular position mocked to the Broncos in the early rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft. This TE class has a lot of fans around the NFL, with the talent being viewed as the deepest group at the position in recent memory. Now we know that if the Broncos are going to target the position early in the draft, they would prefer the player to be a pass catcher first, and they can handle developing his blocking ability. Having that mindset, as opposed to needing a player to excel at both, opens up some options for their pick. It also will likely be music to fans' ears as they would much rather watch their first or second-round TE catching touchdowns in his rookie year than handing out violent blocks. Hearing what Payton prefers to see at TE from draft prospects made a few options come to mind.

Denver Broncos should target the prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft that everyone seems to be overlooking
Would be a perfect fit in Denver
The Broncos give Bo Nix what he needs most in a new 2025 NFL Mock Draft and it could lead to a big sophomore leap in 2025
The Denver Broncos are heading into the offseason with a lot of momentum. They punched their ticket to the AFC playoffs in 2024, even though no one had that type of outlook for them ahead of the year. Now, they head into 2025 with the goal to build off of their success. The Broncos have […]
