Adding an eventual Hall-of-Fame caliber player is never a bad thing.
Sean Payton and George Paton have done everything they can, so far, to make the Denver Broncos competitive once again. This offseason has been about change above all things else.
Now, both Paton and Payton could look to their past in order to fill an important roster position. Specifically, a running back who recently admitted he wasn't "mentally ready" to hang up his cleats.
Adrian Peterson has familiarity with both Paton and Payton. Paton was the Director of player personnel from 2007-2011 for the Vikings who had drafted Peterson in his first year with the team. Payton actually coached Peterson during a short stint with the New Orleans Saints in 2017.
While the Broncos have a dynamic and high-end running back in Javonte Williams, there are some uncertainties surrounding his return. Paton made the announcement a few weeks ago that while his recovery has been promising, there is no concrete timetable for his return.
"We don’t have a date, but we feel good. We feel good that he’ll be back this season. We’re not entirely sure when. He’s progressing very well."
The Broncos spent important offseason capital to bring in Samaje Perine who has six years experience in the NFL and shined in a limited role with the Bengals last season. Outside of Perine, there are a lot of uncertainties which include Tyler Badie, Damarea Crockett, Tony Jones Jr., Tyreik McAllister, and Jaleel McLaughlin.
While Peterson has question marks surrounding his age and explosiveness, bringing him in would be more than just what he's able to do on the football field. The front office has shown they want high-character individuals in the locker room and Peterson could be another powerful voice to help lead and guide the unit.
Take a shot, what's the worst that could happen?
