Don't look now, but the Denver Broncos have almost closed the gap in the AFC West race.

Now at 7-6 following a 24-7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Broncos are only one game back in their division, behind the leader and defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Here are the current AFC West standings following Week 14:

  1. Kansas City Chiefs 8-5
  2. Denver Broncos 7-6
  3. Los Angeles Chargers 5-8
  4. Las Vegas Raiders 5-8

After Denver started the season 1-5, many thought that was the end of it. Now sitting a game over .500, the Broncos are looking at possibly taking the reigns if the Chiefs can slip up a couple more times.

Of course, the Broncos would need K.C. to slip up a couple more times, because the Chiefs currently hold the tiebreaker over Denver. The Chiefs and Broncos split 1-1 this year, but the Chiefs have a better division record at 3-1 vs. Denver's 2-2.

With just four games left to decide the division standings, the Broncos and Chiefs both have three of the same upcoming opponents. Denver has the Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, Chargers and Raiders. The Chiefs have the Cincinnati Bengals, Patriots, Chargers and Raiders.

The fact that the Broncos don't control their own destiny may be concerning for fans, but the Chiefs haven't looked more vulnerable than they do right now in quite some time after losing four of their last six. Right now is the right time for Denver to strike.
