Update: After reports came in that the Broncos had waived Albert Okwuegbunam, the team struck a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles before they submitted the transaction.

The Denver Broncos have released a former fourth-round draft pick as they trim their roster down to 53 players.

As first reported by 9 News' Mike Klis, TE Albert Okwuegbunam has been waived by the Broncos. Apparently, he'd been the subject of some recent trade talks, so he might be at risk of being claimed on the waiver wire.

Okwuegbunam was made a fourth-round pick by Denver in the 2020 NFL draft, pairing him with his former University of Missouri teammate, then-Broncos QB Drew Lock. He made his NFL debut in October of the 2020 season against the Patriots, but he suffered a torn ACL just weeks later.

The 25-year-old had a standout preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams, boasting seven receptions for 109 yards and 1 TD. That performance simply wasn't enough to earn him a spot on the 53-man roster, with players like Adam Trautman, Greg Dulcich and Chris Manhertz clearly ahead of him on the depth chart.
