The Denver Broncos' new quarterback coach has something that sets him apart from the rest.
When the Broncos hired Sean Payton as their new head coach, Payton decided to bring in a new staff. They brought in someone new at every position on the staff, but the one hire that is making headlines is hiring new quarterback coach Davius Webb.
Webb, a 28-year-old, was just a backup quarterback last season and actually scored two touchdowns. Payton saw something he liked in Webb and had to get him.
After the season Russell Wilson just had, Payton knew he had a task ahead of him, so getting someone who could help bring Wilson back was very important. They think they have done just that.
So, how does a 28-year-old who was just a backup in the league qualify as a quarterback coach for a guy who has won a Super Bowl before? Current backup and former XFL quarterback Ben DiNucci explained what separates Davis Webb from others with previous experience in that position.
"He's able to see how this new wave of quarterback approaches mechanics," DiNucci told Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein. "He's trained it himself the past few years and now is applying some of that stuff to our individual periods in practice and watching film. It's very refreshing."
We can only hope the way he coaches, develops, and helps his players will bring the best out of Wilson. Wilson is already being set up better with Payton being in town. However, Webb being a former player and recently being one, may help Wilson. It's a coach that can relate to Wilson in today's league.
Let's hope this gamble works.
