Sean Payton, once again, is shaking things up for the Denver Broncos.
In a surprising move, Payton severed ties with K Brandon McManus. McManus, who was the last remaining member of the Broncos' 2016 Super Bowl-winning team, will finish his career in Denver as the team's 2nd highest scorer, ever.
Since then, the team has brought in K Elliot Fry on a one-year deal. The optics of the deal seem very "prove it" and a sign that the team may not be quite done in their hunt for McManus' replacement.
While it's just a tryout, Payton has brought in a veteran to fight for a roster spot. It was announced that the Broncos were bringing in Randy Bullock, according to a report from Mike Klis of KUSA.
Bullock, a 10-year journeyman, has spent time with the Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, New York Jets and Houston Texans.
Fry is the clear favorite in the locker room but Bullock could truly make a push for the active roster. While it's the smallest of sample sizes if you look at Fry's and Bullock's stats side by side, they are almost identical in one of the most crucial areas: field goal percentage. 83.4 and 83.3 for Bullock and Fry, respectively. Again the numbers are skewed in that Fry has appeared in a whopping 2 games played in a three-year career while Bullock has over 250 field goals attempted, but it's the raw data.
Payton wants to give Wilson all the weapons he can. Bullock, a veteran in this league, would do much more than just provide a solid leg on gameday. If the competition were to be close, don't be surprised if Payton goes for the locker room victory as well.
Whether it's Fry or Bullock, or even a different kicker brought on, they are going to have massive shoes to fill. Not only for the roster but for the city of Denver.
