Broncos can save money by cutting Josey Jewell
Some people won’t like it, but it would help the Broncos out.
The Denver Broncos should be big players in the free agency game coming up on Sunday. They have owners that like to spend money and are a desirable destination to play in.
They brought the coach in that everyone loves to play for in Sean Payton. Now, they need to go get some better guys to actually play for the guy.
The Broncos have needs up and down their roster, and unluckily for them, they don't have a ton of draft picks to snag some of those needs too. So, the free agency market could be their best friend over the next week or so.
But to help them, they may need to create a bit more cap space. According to spotrac, the Broncos currently have $9 million in cap space, which is good enough for the 16th most. They definitely need some more money.
So, what they could do is cut some guys who could save them some money, guys who the organization may think they could get an upgrade over, or don't think they fit the future of the team.
One of the guys I think could end up being cut is Josey Jewell, the starting linebacker last season. Jewell started 13 games for the Broncos and finished with 128 tackles on the season.
But, his coverage wasn't great, to say the least. He finished with a Pro Football Focus coverage grade of 62, which is bad. The Broncos could easily improve in that area in free agency, and cutting Jewell would give them $4.8 million more in space, setting the Broncos at just under $15 million.
It may not happen, but if it did it would definitely help the Broncos.
