The Denver Broncos just made a huge decision after firing first year head coach Nathaniel Hackett.
With a 4-11 record on the year, and expectations that were playoff bound, the Broncos parted ways with Hackett, and will now start the search for their head coach for next season. However, there are still two games left, which means someone needs to take over until then.
Shortly after announcing Hackett was fired, the Broncos announced who would be the interim head coach, and it is none other than the guy Hackett brought in to help him.
Senior assistant coach Jerry Rosburg was brought in by Hackett during the middle of the season to help with time management during the game. He is now the interim head coach of the Broncos.
Ejiro Evero, the Broncos defensive coordinator, was the only real bright spot for the Broncos coaching staff this season, and will likely have other teams looking at him this offseason because of how well he coaches this year. He should have been the obvious choice, but instead will just continue to call the defense.
It turns out, Evero declined the opportunity to focus on the defense. This was a smart move on his part. Evero knows that interim head coaches usually don't get the job anyways, and he will get a ton of attention this offseason as either a defensive coordinator somewhere else, or possibly even the head coach. Plus, he was smart to decline because let's face it, this job isn't a desirable one because of all of the things they have going against them.
I guess making Rosburg the interim head coach is better than Jeff Saturday.
