The Denver Broncos defensive coordinator gave his best payer the ultimate praise.
Most agree that Patrick Surtain II is the best player on the Broncos. Sure, it should be Russell Wilson, but after last season, that title has to go to Surtain. After just two seasons, he is already one of the best in the league at his position.
Surtain, 23, is a top-three cornerback in the league and was a first-time Pro Bowler in 2022. Now, he is trying to do bigger things, like help his team win games and perfect his craft.
"Just keep on being consistent, just keep on being focused on my craft, what I need to work on," Surtain said during minicamp. "But also carrying that on toward team success and helping the team win games. That's why I do it, at the end of the day."
His craft could be better, and that's the scary part. He still has so much more room to improve, yet he is still one of the best. In a way, he is special. His new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph thinks so too.
"He's special," Vance Joseph told the media last Wednesday. "I've watched him play in a lot of games, and he's special. He's a prototype when it comes to height, weight, arm length, and all those things. His special trait is his intelligence.
"He's a very, very smart player. He understands the game, and he works at the game on a daily basis. When you combine that part with his physical traits, it's unique. He's coachable, and he wants to get better every single day. He's definitely a special player."
Special is an understatement. Of course, his dad was pretty good at football, too, so many people saw this coming. However, Surtain is only in his second season, which only a few saw coming this quickly.
The scariest part is, and we have talked about this before so many times, Surtain will only get better. Right now, he is a top-three cornerback in the league. He could be the best in a few years, depending on how Sauce Gardner's career goes.
