The Denver Broncos' best player has some pretty shocking stats revealed when talking about where NFL executives rank him.
Even though the Broncos haven't been a good team since they won the Super Bowl in 2015, they still have some really good players. Justin Simmons has been with the team since 2016, and since then, he has been one of the best safeties in the league.
Of course, everyone loves Von Miller, who is now on the Buffalo Bills. But the one guy that stands out the most when mentioning the good players on this bad 2022 Broncos team is cornerback Patrick Surtain, who had an amazing season. He had the best season from a cornerback's perspective.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN ranks by position yearly, but he bases the rankings on what executives, coaches, and others around the league say. He then has them all rank the players at each position and compiles it together in a consensus ranking. After gathering everything Fowler got, people around the league think Surtain is the best cornerback, over guys like Jalen Ramsey and Sauce Garder.
That was surprising. Many people have Sauce Gardner or Ramsey as the best cornerback in the game. Another surprising thing was a few of the crazy stats Fowler had on Surtain.
He is already one of four NFL players to pick off quarterback Patrick Mahomes multiple times. His 14.5% ball-hawk rate on 10.6 yards allowed per completion is modest, but teams also stay away from him now. His 12.5% target rate was the lowest among cornerbacks with more than 201 coverage snaps (Surtain played 533 coverage snaps). – ESPN
Surtain only had three bad games, if that's what you want to call them. They were bad games in terms of how his opponents did, but not every stat his matchup gets is always his fault. The two matchups against Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams could have been better. Adams had over 100 receiving yards in both games, and the second game had a walk-off touchdown on Surtain.
The other game was against the Carolina Panthers when D.J. Moore exploded for a great game. Other than those two, Surtain was practically flawless. The stat that stands out is the one on picking off Mahomes.
Not only has he done that to the best quarterback in the league, but he is a guy people think could be the most talented of all time. That's more than impressive.
With the new defensive system under Vance Joseph, we can only expect the soon-to-be third-year corner to get better.
