The Denver Broncos don't have a first or second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft due to the trade with the Saints for Sean Payton, the Broncos' new head coach.
The draft is coming up and the Broncos have some big moves they need to make. Sure, they got their guy in Payton, the head coach they wanted all along, but that doesn't fix the holes on the actual roster.
The Broncos have needs on the defensive side of the ball even though they are one of the best defensive rosters in the league.
One of the biggest needs they have on defense is the linebacker spot, and even at pick 67, they can get a guy who is looked at as one of the best at his position in the draft.
Trenton Simpson, the Clemson linebacker, is listed as the 59th-best payer in the draft by Pro Football Focus standards. But, he is listed as the second-best linebacker in his class behind Washington State linebacker Daiyan Henley.
Simpson has great size at the spot – at 6'3" and 230 pounds, he has the size to stick with tight ends if need be, and he isn't too slow either. His sideline-to-sideline speed is pretty good for his size.
Simpson is a guy who plays heavy-man coverage as the weak-side linebacker. He has great movements when playing man-to-man, and has sticky coverage. But, if there is one thing that is pushing him down in this draft, it's his zone coverage abilities, which have to improve at the next level.
The good thing is that everything he needs to improve on is coachable, the stuff that isn't coachable, like the athleticism, he already has.
Simpson has all the tools to be one of the best linebackers in the league.
