The Denver Broncos released their first unofficial depth chart on Tuesday, and with it, Broncos Country has found a serious concern. Rookie QB Box Nix, who many hope and believe will earn the starting job, is listed as the third-stringer behind QBs Jarrett Stidham (first string) and Zach Wilson (second string).
As a way to allay panic from the fanbase, reporters have indicated that every rookie is listed last on the depth chart, regardless of the observed playtime and performance during training camp. Former Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr.even tweeted that he was listed as the 10th cornerback on the roster during his first season with the team.
What Broncos fans should really take a look at to alleviate this concern is their biggest rival in the AFC West.
The Chiefs can serve as an example for the Broncos here
When the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL draft, they had a plan for him to sit behind starting QB Alex Smith for a year. However, Chiefs Kingdom found itself in a complete and utter uproar when the first depth chart came out in preseason Week 1.
The No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Patrick Mahomes, who the team had traded up to acquire, was listed as the No. 3 QB on the depth chart behind former UDFA QB Tyler Bray. Chiefs fans were stunned by the development, but in the long run, it didn't end up mattering much at all.
Even though Mahomes probably should have been listed ahead of Bray (and possibly even Smith), it didn't disrupt his path to greatness. Mahomes wound up being the backup QB to Smith during his rookie season, and he still ended up becoming a multi-time MVP and Super Bowl-winning quarterback. Placement on these preseason depth charts means very little in the grand scheme of things. If anything, it might serve as some motivation for the rookie to show his best work during the Broncos' upcoming preseason Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts.
