The Denver Broncos are ahead of where they should be this time of year, as analysts are already placing them a tier above where they were.
We say this all the time, but the Broncos aren't expected to compete for a championship in 2023. Why would anyone set up those expectations after the 2022 season they just had? However, they are expected to show some sort of improvement and a sense of positive direction.
One NFL analyst actually has the Broncos ahead of schedule in terms of where they are and where they are supposed to be. When ranking each team by tiers, this analyst already has them a tier above where they were last season, and a single snap hasn't been played yet.
Tier 4: Denver Broncos: In Denver, it's all about head coach Sean Payton and the hope that he'll be able to resurrect the franchise after being acquired by the Broncos this offseason. Mainly, it's going to come down to how much of Russell Wilson's struggles last year were on Nathaniel Hackett and how much of it was simply on the quarterback. If it's on the latter, Payton may be on the hunt for a new quarterback over the next calendar year. – Tyler Sullivan, CBS Sports
Last year they were in tier five, which is where the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts are. They were just as bad as those teams.
Sean Payton was the right hire for the job because of what he had done before. He is tasked with turning the franchise around, and he has already done that in the past. The New Orleans Saints were in a six-year playoff drought before Payton was hired, and they went 3-13 the year before that. The very next year, Payton's first year, they made the NFC Championship game.
That alone is enough to move the Broncos into a tier above where they were before. Then you add in the fact that Payton will out Russell Wilson in positions to succeed, he will have the proper offense in place, and he will instill a culture that is needed.
The Broncos are soon on their way to being in that next tier. But right now, they are ahead of schedule.
