Broncos get some good injury news ahead of Week 1 matchup against the Titans that’ll go a long way toward securing a victory
Phew, Sean Payton was true to his word.
The Denver Broncos open the 2025 NFL season with a home contest against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 7. The team has trimmed its roster from 90 to 53 players, assembled its practice squad, and has its sights set on dominating both sides of the football. To be successful, it needs to be healthy, and the latest report from practice gives the team a huge boost heading into their Week 1 matchup. All-Pro return man Marvin Mims Jr. was seen at practice after suffering an injury that had more than a few members of Broncos Country a little worried. Nevertheless, head coach Sean Payton said over the weekend that the receiver would be back — and sure enough, there he was. One of the league’s best returners is back at practice.
Mims Jr. left practice early on Aug. 27 after suffering a reported groin injury. Throughout the process, it was not considered to be serious, but rather a waiting game for when he’d be back. A long holiday weekend did nothing to quiet the nerves, but he’s since joined the team on Monday. Outside of the obvious benefit of his return game, he’s a rising star on the offense and is hoping for big things heading into his third NFL season. Mims Jr. finished his 2024 campaign with 39 receptions for 503 yards and six touchdowns while only starting in two contests.
Mims Jr. is on the rise and ready for 2025
That doesn’t tell the whole story, though, as Nix and the offense really seemed to begin to unlock the receiver’s full potential late in the season. As Denver Sports reported, he was on a 1,000-yard pace from Week 10 through the end of the regular season. Once the team started to feed him the ball, he became a reliable and frequent target for Nix. Speaking early on during OTAs, Payton expressed how he has grown throughout his tenure and that it’s impossible not to take notice.
“I’ve said this to you before,” Payton said. “Confidence is born out of demonstrated ability. Athletes grow up right in front of your eyes. That began not just at the end of the season. That began early part of the middle [of the] season. You could see it and certainly feel it now.”
Maybe by the end of the season, we’ll be talking about a third consecutive All-Pro nod for Mims Jr. in the kicking game and a breakout candidate as a receiver. The dynamic playmaker is back, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
