The Denver Broncos have found themselves in a rough situation, one that I don't think anyone could have guessed would happen when the trade went down.
The Denver Broncos, in an effort to get out of the playoff drought and back to the top of the AFC West, traded for Russell Wilson. In the last few years, the notion has been that the Broncos are a good quarterback and coach away from being back where they want to be.
It's safe to say that was wrong. Well, maybe not, because we still haven't seen either. Unfortunately, the Broncos are stuck with Wilson though, after giving him a lucrative deal before seeing him play a single snap in the regular season.
He is still fixable, though. Well, that's what the Broncos themselves believe. Either they believe it, or they are saying it anyways in an attempt to make us believe it after making such a poor choice.
"The decision to have Russell here was a long-term one," Greg Penner said. "This season has not been up to his standards or expectations. We saw some glimpses of it in the last few weeks. He knows he can play better, we know he can play better, and we know he will do the right work in the offseason to be ready for next year.
"George and I have had a chance to get to know each other — we talk every day since we purchased the team a number of months ago — and he acknowledged right up front there were a couple of decisions that hadn't worked out as he had expected. But I understand his thought process. He understands the work that needs to be done in this offseason, and I'm going to rely on him heavily as we go through and make these changes."
Wilson carries a $22 million cap hit in 2023 and a $35 million hit in 2024. His cap hit then explodes to $50+ million from 2025-2028. But per Spotrac, the Broncos have a potential out in 2026, even if it will cost more than #31 million in dead cap.
So either way, the Broncos are tied to Wilson for longer than I think anyone would like. It seems like the only option is to fix him, if possible.
