New Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton could be bringing an intriguing name to the Mile High City.

According to a report from Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, Payton interviewed former New York Jets/Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan for the Broncos' defensive coordinator opening this week.

Ryan currently works as an analyst for ESPN. He also recently competed on the reality television show "The Amazing Race".

This would certainly be an interesting hire by Payton and the Broncos.

For starters, Ryan hasn't coached in the NFL since 2016 when he was fired by the Bills. And he hasn't been a defensive coordinator since the 2008 season.

The last image we have of Ryan in the NFL was him saying that he didn't wish Buffalo good luck after he got fired.

The other reason this would be an interesting hire is because Ryan's brother, Rob, was Payton's defensive coordinator for three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Rob Ryan was fired after the 2015 season due to the Saints' defense finishing dead last in the NFL (Rob is currently a senior defensive assistant with the Las Vegas Raiders).

Maybe this is just Payton doing his due diligence in his search for a defensive coordinator. Broncos fans should hope that's the case at least. I'm not sure hiring a controversial defensive coordinator who hasn't coached in the NFL for six years is a good idea.
