Broncos head coach Sean Payton drops some important truth that all Denver fans need to hear, even if they disagree
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton shared some important wisdom this week.
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton dropped some truth this week that all NFL fans need to hear.
But especially Broncos fans.
At the start of free agency, there were plenty of complaints from fans about the Broncos’ lack of aggressiveness. While other teams handed out big-money deals, Denver was content to focus on re-signing some of their in-house free agents.
The Broncos finished the first wave of free agency with a splash move, making a deal with the Miami Dolphins for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, giving quarterback Bo Nix the playmaker he badly needs.
That move, however, wasn’t enough to silence the loud portion of the fan base that still feels like the team hasn’t done enough this offseason to improve the roster.
Part of the frustration from the fan base is because Nix is still on his rookie contract, which is an ideal spot for any NFL team to be.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton drops some truth
Payton spoke to reporters on Tuesday in Arizona at the NFL league meeting, and he commented on Denver’s “slow” start to free agency.
“You have to apply some patience and have a good plan,” said Payton while discussing the Broncos’ offseason. “And we recognize where we’re at — we understand exactly where we’re at with Bo’s contract and our team. And yet, the mistake two-thirds of the teams make is trying to win the day — win the Draft Day, win the hiring cycle day, and win the free agency day. We’re interested in winning.
“Our fan base is extremely important to us, but we’re going to do what we think is best for our team to be better when this puzzle is finished at the end of… June. And then what do we look like at that point? But I do think patience is important.”
Any NFL front office can be reckless and sign guys just to win headlines. Payton, though, understands that’s not the best way to build a championship roster.
Everyone wants to win the offseason, but Payton is more focused on winning on Sundays in the fall — which is why he’s the right coach to lead this franchise.
