The Denver Broncos have cycled through a total of 13 starting quarterbacks since Peyton Manning won his final Super Bowl ring for the Orange and Blue. So, it's safe to say that they have had their fair share of issues since one of the greatest of all time suited it up for the franchise.
Now, no one in their right mind is saying Bo Nix, their rookie QB, is going to be the next Peyton Manning. However, there is a good chance he will be the best quarterback they have had since him. Then again, that's not very hard.
Nix has a ton of potential. But, potential doesn't always land. Just in case, they have a backup plan and a backup plan to that backup plan. The Broncos still have Jarrett Stidham on their roster, and they traded for former New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson recently, too.
As for the trade for Wilson, it raised a lot of questions from the fan base. Sure, he was a second-overall pick by the Jets. But, he has pretty much shown what he is. The Broncos wanted him for a reason though.
“We just felt like, ‘Man, we’d love to work with this guy,'" Payton said on Tuesday. "[We] felt the investment was worth it relative to his skill set and his talent. So it took a while. We spent the better part of a month and a half working on that trade.”
With OTAs wrapped up from the Broncos, they have now seen enough of Wilson and what he is in Sean Payton's offense. It's a completely different offense than what Nathaniel Hackett ran in both Denver and New York. But, Wilson is picking it up nicely.
“He’s doing well with it," Payton said of Wilson. "When we got Jarrett, he came from—there’s about three strains of language in our league. I’d say you have the West Coast strain, you’ve got the old digits system, and then you have kind of what the Patriots have run, [former NFL coach] Ron Erhardt, Bill Belichick, and [Bill] Parcells.
"So Jarrett had come from that strain, and I’d say there’s a pretty significant iPhone-to-Android adjustment there. Whereas in Zach’s case, there are a little bit more similarities relative to how things are called. Not all, but these guys picked that up pretty quickly.”
You hate to keep saying this, but Payton is known as the "quarterback whisperer." He has restored quarterbacks before, so they say. He wasn't able to do it with Russell Wilson, but he did somewhat do it with Drew Brees. So, hey, maybe he can do it with Wilson.
First, to see that, we would need to see Wilson as the starter. He's got to win the job over from Nix first, and I'm not sure that will happen.
