The Denver Broncos' newest member took some shots at his former team recently.
The Broncos spent a ton of money this offseason on a few different players, but one of those guys is Ben Powers, who was formerly on the Baltimore Ravens. Last Thursday he took a shot at his former team.
"I don't think they can afford me," Powers said to the media Thursday when asked why he didn't end up back in Baltimore.
Powers signed a four-year $52 million deal with the Broncos this summer, where he will be their left guard of the future, playing right next to Garett Bolles and Lloyd Cushenberry. Spending big money on the offensive line was crucial for the Broncos in the 2023 offseason.
The Broncos had the worst offensive line in 2022, as they lead the league in sacks allowed with 61, and allowed Russell Wilson to be sacked 55 times, tied with Justin Field for the most by any one quarterback.
If you want to get better in that area, in the NFL you either go out and spend money on it, or you develop the guys you have. The Broncos thought spending money would be the easier choice, and the new ownership group is certainly more than willing to spend a little bit of money too.
They also added right tackle Mike McGlinchey this summer, who is coming over from the San Francisco 49ers in an effort to be a part of turning around the Broncos franchise. But Ben Powers was one of the underrated signings in my opinion.
Powers played more than 600 pass-blocking snaps last season where he blocked for Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley, yet, he allowed just 12 total pressures. Of all guards with at least 327 pass-blocking snaps in 2022, Powers allowed the 11th least amount of pressures, but everyone who allowed less than him didn't play anywhere near the number of snaps he did. Of the ten above him, only two played more than 500 pass block snaps, and they barely passed the 500 mark.
Besides the money and the fact he is really good, there is something that connected the two sides wanting to work together.
"As you're saying Sean Payton always valuing guards, that's something I knew coming in here," Powers said. "So that obviously influenced my decision."
Payton is not only going to get the best out of the offensive line, but we could see an even better version of Powers, which sounds crazy, to be honest. He is one of the best guards in the league, and I'd go out on a limb and say after next season he may be the best.
