Every team has had its fair share of offseason drama from time to time, and the Denver Broncos are no different. They have had drama as well, this time from maybe their best player on the team, and certainly the best player on the offense.
This offseason it has come in the form of their best wide receiver wanting more money. It's as simple as that. No matter how complicated anyone tries to make it. Courtland Sutton wants more guaranteed money, and that's fair, as he does deserve it.
When the Broncos started their mandatory minicamp, Sutton, who held out of involuntary OTAs, made sure he was at mandatory minicamp. However, he still made it known what he wanted.
With training camp now here, we knew the deal would soon get done, we just didn't know when. On Thursday, before practice, the Broncos got it done. According to Mike Klis of Denver 9 News, the Broncos are giving Sutton a pay raise in contract incentives from $200 thousand to now $1.5 million.
We knew that Sutton wants a guaranteed $2 million raise. Considering the exceptional performance Courtland Sutton has consistently delivered, his desire to see his current $13.5 million base salary elevated to the $15-$16 million range is not surprising. Despite the challenging circumstances he has faced, including a lackluster team environment, Sutton has managed to maintain his productivity.
So, this is very similar to that, and it's obviously something he is okay with, or he wouldn't have signed on the dotted line. Sutton deserves this money, and it was only a matter of time before the Broncos gave it to him.
