However, it appears in the eyes of some that the work may not be enough. During their latest power rankings, PFF put the Broncos in the 28th position. An underwhelming update to say the least.
After last season's monumental collapse, Denver fans were hoping for some good news. It appears in the eyes of some of the national media, that's not happening quite yet. While Payton has been busy this offseason, PFF was quick to point out some issues surrounding the team.
The publication highlighted both the biggest loss and biggest addition this offseason. For their loss, C Graham Glasgow's departure is what the team was dinged on the most. While Payton made moves to protect Russell Wilson, losing Glasgow was seen as a step in the wrong direction.
As for a victory, this one should take the Broncos' faithful by surprise. While Payton has added key pieces to the offensive line in Ben Powers and Mike McGlinchey, it was the signing of the presumed backup quarterback, Jarrett Stidham that PFF loved the most.
Recently, Payton had gushed over the addition of Stidham to the roster. Going so far as to hint that Stidham may one day take over as signal-caller.
Another slight positive that PFF pointed out was more of a net-neutral for the team, right now. The loss of Dre'Mont Jones definitely stings but the team was able to bring in a high-profile player in Zach Allen. The former Arizona Cardinals had some injury concerns but if he can stay healthy could be a dominant force on an already impressive defensive unit.
Regardless, fans are looking for some light at the end of the tunnel after the sky-high expectations weren't even close to met last season. With PFF ranking Broncos nearly last in the entire NFL, this is a step in the wrong direction.
Here's hoping that Payton's recent acquisitions are much more impactful than the publication is presuming them to be. Another rocky season from Russell Wilson and company and we could be having a much different discussion this time next year.
