There has been plenty of noise surrounding Denver Broncos RB Javonte Williams and his return back to football. Williams had been ramping up his practice schedule and flashing on the field.
Things reached a fever pitch when it was suggested he could see some playing time against the Arizona Cardinals in week one of the preseason. Admittedly, we were kind of frightened at the idea as the Cardinals stadium is a graveyard for ACLs with how terrible their field conditions are. Seriously, look at this.
Luckily, Williams didn't see any action which allowed players like RB Samje Perine, RB Tyler Badie, and RB Jaleel McLaughlin to get some much-needed reps at the position. It's clear that Perine is the number two on this offense but getting Badie and McLaughlin playing time to fight for a roster spot was imperative.
James Palmer reported that Williams is a full go and will play in the team's second preseason game against the 49ers on Saturday, going so far as to mention that he is back at 100%.
Payton, as he normally does, didn't stick with guarantees. Rather, he left the media with one simple quote about Williams' opportunity to see the playing field: "I plan on playing him."
With Sean Payton putting his fingerprints all over the team and making some sweeping changes, is it crazy to say that we're excited about Broncos football again?
Broncos fans weren't given much reason to smile or celebrate last season as the team seemingly forgot what football was. Russell Wilson was flat-out bad, the Nathanial Hackett experience was a trainwreck, and the injuries derailed any chances the organization had to be successful.
Last week sucked, losing the game at almost quite literally the last second stung, even for a preseason game, but the team showed fight and promise. I wrote about the game and discussed the takeaways.
Here's hoping the offensive line can hold up long enough for Williams to break off one impressive run, then sit him back on the sideline and apply the bubble wrap.
The football gods have not been kind to this team, the last thing we need is for Williams to go down with an injury.
Broncos sign WR J.J. Koski
The Denver Broncos are wasting no time adding important depth to the roster. Getting Wilson more weapons is sure to put a smile on his face.
