The Denver Broncos are still figuring out a way to recover from such a brutal loss. It doesn't make it any better either considering the fact that it came at the hands of their biggest rival in the Las Vegas Raiders.
The game was theirs to lose, as it felt like a lot of the first half they were in control of the game, as the Raiders kept shooting themselves in the foot. However, that didn't last long.
It doesn't make it feel any better that the Raiders were one of only two teams in the league that didn't have a win yet, and the Broncos gave them their first.
A lot of players are going to put the blame on themselves, but none more than second-string running back Melvin Gordon. He fumbled the ball that ended up going for a touchdown, his fourth fumble of the year and one more than he had all of last season.
After the game, Gordon was due up for media availability. He started the presser by saying:
“I just got to be better, man,” Gordon told the media after the game when asked about his thoughts on the fumble. “There isn’t an excuse for it. I don’t want to get up here and tell you anything. That ain’t right. I just got to be better. That’s it.”
Then, after that, he was asked about how frustrated he was knowing he has been working on ball security and it has happened yet again. This is what he did:
Gordon walked straight out of the media availability room. He didn't seem very happy, and you can't really blame the guy.
However, the Broncos' new franchise quarterback showed why he is the leader he is. Wilson tried to be that beacon of light for Gordon.
"‘You're one of the best guys that ever played this game at this position, & don't forget that.’ I kept reminding him, ‘Don't forget that, don't forget that, don't forget that.’ Keep reminding yourself who you are & what you've done'"
If there is anything positive you should take away from the loss, I'd say make it this. Wilson is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he actually played very well on Sunday. But he is an even better leader, and that's the guy you want leading your team.
