The Denver Broncos were one of the more active teams in the league during free agency. They made moves that should make this team better in 2023, or all the money they have spent may start to look like a bad decision, again.
The Broncos have always been a team that attracts free agents, whether it be the scenery of the beautiful state, the history of the franchise, or the new head coach.
"I just felt like I wanted to be a part of something special. I know coach Payton's past and he's a great coach and I just wanted to have an opportunity to play for him," new Broncos running back Samaje Perine said.
For Perine and every other free agent, Sean Payton has been a part of the recruiting of free agents. Guys want to play for him. But to him, the biggest reason he wanted to play in Denver, was because of Russell Wilson.
"Also getting to play with Russell Wilson, I have been watching him for a while now, and have an opportunity to play with him," Perine continued. "That was big for me. Loved my time in Cincinnati, but I just felt like it was time for something different."
It was somewhat of a shock to hear that if we are going to be completely honest. Last season was terrible as a whole, and it was equally bad for Wilson. He didn't look like the guy we knew in Seattle.
He was bad at times, even if the coaching was bad, there were still throws he couldn't make. Seeing that, you would think free agents would want to shy away from that. Perine wants to be around it.
The best part about this signing though is how much the two sides needed each other, I guess you could say. The Broncos were in the market for another running back, especially with Javonte Williams' injury situation up in the air. And the Broncos needed a guy that can start while Williams recovers, and then be the second guy when Williams comes back.
As for Perine, he needed a team that he could show he deserves to be a starting running back on. This team is the perfect one for him because he will get that opportunity, and he fits what Payton wants to do.
"I think I fit in great with what coach Payton's trying to do," Perine said during his interview. "A ground and pound offense to give on the perimeter an opportunity to have some one on one situations. Hopefully, we will be able to do that. You aren't going to get anything flashy from me, just a constant dose of in-your-face running. That's what I do best."
I think Broncos fans will love what they get in Perine. He's going to run some guys over, and he can catch it in the backfield. It seems like Denver is making all the right moves.
