One of the hardest things to do in the NFL, outside of winning a Super Bowl, of course, is finding a franchise quarterback. The Denver Broncos struggled with that for years after Peyton Manning left.
Now they have Russell Wilson, one of the better quarterbacks in this league over the last decade or so. Wilson may not have an MVP, but he has a Super Bowl ring, along with another Super Bowl appearance – some of you remember the first Super Bowl appearance when the Broncos were obliterated.
Finding a quarterback is hard. It took the Broncos a while, and they missed in both free agency and the draft. The Brock Osweiler/Trevor Siemian/Drew Lock/Teddy Bridgewater years were brutal. Now, there is another team going through the exact same situation.
The Seattle Seahawks are currently stuck in a quarterback cycle after trading away the best one they have ever had in Wilson. When they traded away Wilson, they received Lock, linebacker Shelby Jones, and tight end Noah Fant, along with some draft picks.
Last season, when Wilson missed some time, Geno Smith was his backup and went 1-2 while quarterbacking the team. Smith is still with the Seahawks this year. That's how we are currently in the situation we are in.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll thinks they currently have two starting quarterbacks on their roster ready for Week 1:
"We've got it worked out where we are figuring out playing time right now," head coach Pete Carroll recently told reporters. "Drew [Lock] needs to play a lot of football, because he missed a game, so that's the main thing to get done for this weekend.
“I’m saying we weren’t afforded that opportunity this time around. I can go ahead and just call it, but I want to let the guys battle and show where they are and let us get as much information as possible. Geno (Smith) has done a really good job of being in that position. His voice is solid.
"He’s on point all the time. He’s been very consistent with his work and all of that and Drew has been really sharp. I know it’s not supposed to be a good situation when you have two quarterbacks and it means you don’t have one is the old saying, but I don’t know though we might have two 1’s. We’ll see what happens.”
Carroll likes both quarterbacks, and apparently, he has seen something the Broncos didn't in Lock. Either that, or he just has no other option, and Smith is just as bad.
Regardless, Broncos fans know all too well what it's like to be in quarterback purgatory. Especially with Lock.
Now, some of you will say "this is a Broncos site, why do we care about what the Seahawks are doing?"
Well, this is more important than you may think, mainly because the Broncos play Seattle in Week 1. This is somewhat hard for the Broncos. On one hand, they know exactly how Lock plays, and could game plan for him easily. However, what if they spent too much time on game planning for a guy who might not even play?
The Broncos will need to, and I'm sure they are, monitor the situation very closely. The Seahawks may not have Wilson anymore, but they have some really good pieces on their team that can still hurt you if you're not ready.
