The Denver Broncos broke an unprecedented streak and finally beat the Kansas City Chiefs with a dominant defensive performance that saw the team take away the ball from Patrick Mahomes and the offense throughout the contest. Immediately after the contest, Payton opened up on the defense and what they were able to accomplish.
Payton gave his flowers to the defensive unit as a whole, something Joseph has to be thrilled about, "I thought defensively we did a fantastic job with their offense, and a tough offense. We didn't have the sack production but we had a lot of hurries. I felt like we did a good job of keeping him (Patrick Mahomes) off schedule."
From interceptions, fumble recoveries, and strip sacks, the defense was balling out and constantly backing up the Chiefs on their drives. The Denver Broncos' social media team even got into the fun, calling out national pundits who had all but guaranteed a victory for the Chiefs.
After the Broncos' last victory, head coach Sean Payton laid into Vance Joseph's defense, calling out their performance and lackluster performance. Immediately following the victory over the Chiefs, Payton changed his tune, praising the defense for being able to do what was thought to be impossible, shutting down Patrick Mahomes.
Speaking candidly about the team finally getting a win over the Chiefs, the first time in 17 attempts, Payton offered the following, "Look, a fair question. It's an important game for us and it wasn't streak driven. It was important for us to play well before the bye. We dig ourselves into a hole, obviously, we're playing a good team." Payton continued, "Honestly, not once has it come up and I recognize there are a few players that have gone through that timeframe, new roster. The focus really was on this game and I felt we did the things you do when you win."
A few weeks ago, it seemed like the sky was falling in Denver as they seemed to be on the brink of a firesale. Now, there is a renewed optimism after slaying the beast that is the Chiefs.
They have a bye before they take on the Bills in Buffalo. Could they shock the world and pull off another upset? Only time will tell.
