The Denver Broncos had a chance to get either even with the Kansas City Chiefs or stay one game behind them in the division as they were set to face the Detroit Lions on Saturday, but the game did not go how they expected it to go. These two teams are very close in terms of coaches' and players' relationships. The Lions have players who played for Sean Payton, like linebacker Alex Anzalone and Dan Campbell coached under Payton.
Now, the Lions are a great team, but the Broncos dealt with some totally self-inflicted things. This game was winnable before the first kick, but as the game wore on, it seemed like the idea of winning was starting to fade away.
Things got chippy in this game, and the sideline had a bit of action too. After three failed attempts to get into the end zone, the final one was an offsides penalty that was totally not offsides. After the three failed attempts, with at least two that were indeed in the end zone, we saw head coach Sean Payton get livid on the sideline toward Russell Wilson.
So, after the game, a reporter asked Payton about the situation, and Payton didn't hold back from the reporter.
"I was upset with the call," Payton told the reporter. "I was upset about the call."
A few questions later, what sounded like the same reporter returned to the same question.
"What Russell and I talk about is none of your business."
Payton aids that with a bit of attitude, and I'm sure it's not easy repeating yourself, but the question is valid. Why was Payton yelling at Russell Wison while Wilson stood there silent, not doing anything?
A few more questions passed, and Payton was asked again about the situation.
"I know you're trying to get back to the Russell thing. We handed the ball off, and there was a foul."
The Broncos fell very short, but the good news is the playoffs are still something that is obtainable. This team can get hot at any moment, as we saw at times this year. However, they are running out of time. They get a day head start on preparing for the New England Patriots next while hoping they beat the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday.
