The Denver Broncos are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now, on both sides of the ball. Heck, even special teams ace and kicker Will Lutz was nails all game long and even broke the record for the fastest player to ever reach 1,000 career points. The entire team played their part.
But, what may go unnoticed, is the coaching adjustments the team made. Maybe not on the defensive side with how they guarded Jerry Jeudy, who absolutely torched the Broncos, but with everything else, including their aggressiveness in certain situations. One of those decisions saved their game.
Late in the game, with the Broncos in the red zone and unable to convert on the third down, Sean Payton was staring at a 4th and 1 situation. His team hurried back to the huddle after the third down, and they got sent out to run a play. Then, Payton called time out, and the Broncos ended up kicking a field goal.
The question that fans are asking is why didn't they go for it on that one when they usually would have. Well, it's pretty simple actually.
“I had a play. I just wanted to see what we were getting, and then I did not like the play once I saw what we were getting. It was a full-blitz zero look. I felt like that time helped me to kick the field goal," Payton said after the win over the Cleveland Browns.
On a third and sixth play, the Broncos ran a screenplay to wide receiver Marvin Mims that went for five yards. That's when the whole situation happened, as they were down by one point with 3:30 left in the game. Let's say they do go for it and they don't get it. Then they are down one point, against an offense that, at that point was hot. If Cleveland scores there then the game may be over.
So, yes, this call-to-call timeout and take the points was one that very well could have saved the game for the Broncos.
After their bye week, the Broncos will take on the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and Cincinnati Bengals.
