Brandon McManus will go down as one of the greatest Denver Broncos players of all time. He was the last remaining member of their most recent Super Bowl-winning team and is the second-highest-scoring player in team history.
However, he is now looking for another job. The team made it official, cutting the franchise legend in a surprise move for not only the Broncos but the entire NFL.
Needless to say, McManus' services were immediately sought after as the former Broncos kicker wasted no time signing with a new team. The Jacksonville Jaguars made it official by signing McManus.
While fans may have been confused about the decision, we didn't have to wait long to find out the truth behind him being cut from the roster. Immediately after the most recent practice, Sean Payton opened up to the media about his decision.
The Broncos head coach appeared to insinuate a difference in the organization's direction along with money being a factor.
"Yeah, look, ultimately, you're constantly looking at what's the best interest for your team. And a lot of times, money and what your musts are come into it. …”
Payton continued with a more matter-of-fact response with the fluidity of the league, even for franchise cornerstones like McManus.
"“… You guys know this better than anyone: The transactions continue here from now until training camp. And there may be a player or two we're still looking to sign. So, we factor a lot of that in, and then we made that decision."
Denver wasted no time trying to fill the important roster hole that McManus left behind. Payton and the front office brought in Brett Maher, Elliott Fry and Parker White.
McManus finished his nine-year career in Denver with 112 games played, 81.4% field goal percentage, and 946 total points. Unfortunately, McManus had a below-average season when compared to previous years. In fact, his 77.8% field goal percentage last season was the third worst of his career and 109 total points were in the middle of the pack for the rest of his career.
Fans will be cheering for McManus during his tenure with Jacksonville, as long as they aren't playing the Broncos.
