You may remember vividly the CBS broadcast showing Jerry Jeudy throwing a fit downfield wide-open against the Houston Texans. It would have been a huge play for the Denver Broncos, not one that would have won them the game, but you can certainly say it would have helped.
Denver was one pass away from winning that game, as Russell Wilson's final pass was an interception in the end zone. Wilson hasn't been perfect, but he definitely hasn't been as bad as he was last year. However, one issue he seems to be having in 2023 is missing wide receivers wide open downfield.
Specifically Jerry Jeudy.
"Jerry went through a stretch. I don't want to call it a dry spell, but certainly frustration," Payton said on Monday. "Even when we won, he wanted to be part of it. We want to get his hands on the ball. That was a play, though, where they dropped coverage, and he very easily was a viable target for a big play. Finally, he was able to make a few in that game."
Jeudy has been in the news a lot lately. One could say it's because of the situation with a former receiver turned media member Steve Smith Sr., and one could also say it's because he hasn't been producing.
The best receiver on the team this year has been Courtland Sutton. However, if we were to count the many times Jeudy was missed wide open, that opinion could be different.
Even Sean Payton is surprised by how often it has happened.
"Really, if you look at the tape closely and you watch all of it—I know some of you get to do that," Payton said. "If you watch all of it, holy cow, there are about two or three of those plays."
The Broncos, and specifically Russell Wilson, have to do a better job at getting Jeudy involved. The young receiver has the ability to take one to the house, given the space, but he needs to be given the ball first. He has become one of the top route runners in the league.
There are only five games left, which isn't much time to get the issue fixed. So, it's now or never.
