The Denver Broncos surprised some folks when they released veteran QB Josh Johnson earlier this week. Johnson provides a great veteran presence and played well in the preseason. The Broncos opted to keep a younger option, Brett Rypien, as their backup to Russell Wilson. A reunion with Johnson was always possible, though.

That reunion is what occurred today. They signed Johnson to their practice squad. So, they will have the same trio of QBs that they have had all offseason. Brett Rypien remains the backup.

This move makes total sense for the Broncos. Johnson knows the playbook and personnel very well in Denver. Coaches love him, and his teammates have praised him during his entire career. He is a guy that you want in your QB room, regardless of his role on the team.
