The Denver Broncos made a shocking decision for their last two games of the season. It makes sense, so that's not why it's shocking. It's shocking because you wouldn't have really seen this coming a year and a half ago.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Broncos will bench Russell Wilson for the last two games of the 2023 season, even with a potential playoff push happening.

Head coach Sean Payton met with the team and Wilson on Wednesday morning, letting them know that Jarret Stidham would be the starter.

Russell Wilson is due $39 million, fully guaranteed in 2024. Benching him sets up salary flexibility for the future; if he were to get injured, a large portion of his contract would then become guaranteed. Another $37 million in 2025 is guaranteed for injury only until the 5th day of the 2024 league year in March.

We saw something similar to this happen in Las Vegas with the Raiders and Derek Carr last season.

This ultimately means the Russell Wilson era is over in Denver.
