The Denver Broncos have solved their kicking dilemma and are reuniting Sean Payton with one of his former players in the process.
According to numerous reports, the Broncos have traded with the New Orleans Saints to acquire K Wil Lutz. Rookie Blake Grupe gave Lutz a run for his money in the preseason, so much so that Lutz seemed to know that preseason Week 3 would be his final game with the team.
We don't yet have the terms and conditions of the trade, but there has been quite a bit of movement around the league at the kicker position this week.
The Broncos only had K Brett Maher on the roster this preseason after releasing long-time kicker Brandon McManus.
Maher was 4-of-6 on field goal attempts and 8-of-8 on extra point attempts. He had a long kick of 48 yards. His misses included a 47-yard attempt and a 52-yard attempt blocked as well. We can expect that Maher will now be released.
Lutz was 4-of-4 on field goal attempts and 3-of-3 on extra points during the preseason. He should also get a nice boost to his kicking range while playing at Mile High.
The process might not have been great here, releasing McManus to only eventually trade for Lutz, but there is no doubt that Denver got their guy.
