The Denver Broncos could be looking to add a former NFL head coach to Sean Payton's coaching staff.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Denver has requested permission to interview Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers coach Brian Flores for their defensive coordinator job.
Flores was the Miami Dolphins' head coach from 2019 to 2021. He was inexplicably fired after two straight winning seasons.
The odd thing about this request is that Denver doesn't technically have a defensive coordinator opening right now.
Ejiro Evero is still under contract as the Broncos' defensive coordinator. But the request to interview Flores would seem to indicate that Evero won't be returning to Denver. If that's the case, Evero will be an in-demand defensive coordinator after the work he did with the Broncos in 2022.
Flores was a solid head coach in Miami. And he's obviously been a tremendous position coach when he's served in that role. But he's actually never been a defensive coordinator before, so there would be some risk in this move.
I don't think hiring Flores would be a bad idea despite the lack of experience — I think he'd do a fine job. Evero, however, might be the smarter choice. He's proven he can have success in Denver while Flores has yet to prove himself as a coordinator.
Maybe Payton is just doing his due diligence and he'll circle back to Evero. We should know in the coming days/weeks how this will play out.
