There’s a solution right in front of the Broncos’ face after missing on a couple of their top free agent running back targets
The Denver Broncos are still looking for a running back to add to their roster.
It’s no secret that the Denver Broncos need to add a free agent running back to their roster, but the franchise has already missed on a couple of their top targets.
Kenneth Walker III agreed to a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, while Travis Etienne is joining the New Orleans Saints after agreeing to a deal.
The Broncos had interest in both players.
Denver also declined to pursue Tyson Allgeier, who landed with the Arizona Cardinals.
So what’s next?
Denver reportedly has interest in bringing JK Dobbins back in 2026.
Dobbins is only 27, and he’s a productive player when healthy. The problem, however, is staying healthy — Dobbins has missed 27 games over the last three seasons.
There’s an easy and obvious solution for the Broncos
At this point, bringing Dobbins back seems like a wise move for the Broncos. He already knows the offense, and he’s still capable of taking over a game from to time.
But Denver would still need another running back even if they bring Dobbins back.
So what about Alvin Kamara?
With Etienne heading to New Orleans, it seems like the writing is on the wall for Kamara, who will turn 31 in July.
Kamara, though, has indicated that he doesn’t want to leave New Orleans.
“I don’t want to go anywhere, and l’ve said it countless times,” said Kamara last season. “Y’all know that, I think everybody knows that, the fan base knows that. At the end of the day, it’s business. I don’t go upstairs, I don’t have an office upstairs…so I don’t really sit in those meetings, I don’t know what happens up there. I’ve just got to keep my head down.
“If I was a GM, I guess I would go to the player and say, ‘Hey, we’re trading you, just so you know. So if Mickey comes down and says that, I’m going to go drink a piña colada somewhere.”
If the Saints move on from Kamara, he could decide to retire.
If there’s one scenario that Kamara may be open to, it would likely be reuniting with Sean Payton in Denver.
Kamara had some of the best seasons of his career during his five years with Payton in New Orleans. The former Tennessee Vols standout isn’t the same player he used to be — he’s coming off the worst season of his career — but Kamara showed in 2024 that he still has a little something left in the tank.
Pairing Kamara with Dobbins would be risky, but the idea is that sharing the load between the two would allow both players to stay healthy all season.
Acquiring Kamara probably wouldn’t be difficult as it seems clear the Saints are ready to move on. One last ride with Payton could be an attractive option for the five-time Pro Bowler.
Update:
Dobbins is officially coming back to Denver.
