Denver Broncos owner addresses the biggest question of the offseason and confirms everyone’s suspicion
The Denver Broncos have had an interesting offseason so far. Denver traded for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, but that wasn’t the biggest change of the offseason for Sean Payton and the Broncos.
Denver Broncos owner Greg Penner addressed one of the biggest questions of the offseason at the NFL’s annual meeting in Phoenix last week.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton decided earlier this offseason that he’s going to hand off play-calling duties in 2026 to quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, who was promoted to offensive coordinator in February.
“It’s still going to be our offense, but I think it’s easier to do as you get older and you look at, ‘How do we win more games?’” said Payton when he announced the move. “… I think it’s going to help our team, and I’ll do everything I can to support him. It’s something that I wouldn’t do if I didn’t think would help.”
“I think it will help us, and certainly I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think it was going to help our team win. You get to a point where you’re focused strictly on improving your team any way you can.”
It’s a move that’s been celebrated by some Denver players, including running back J.K. Dobbins.
“I think it’s going to impact me big time,” said Dobbins. “I think Webb is a fantastic play caller, and so is Sean Payton. So with the help of Sean Payton, with Davis Webb, I think it’s going to be even better than last year. I think we’re going to do some things that people won’t expect.”
It seems like a positive move for the Broncos, but there are some fans who have questioned whether it was a move Payton was “forced” to make.
Broncos owner Greg Penner addresses Sean Payton’s play-calling decision
Penner made it clear last week that handing over play-calling duties was entirely Payton’s decision.
“I think that Sean always wants to do what’s in the best interest of this team and the Broncos’ organization,” said Penner. “He and I obviously talked about it, but this was entirely, 100 percent his decision. We have a lot of confidence in Davis, and I think Sean is going to be very supportive of him.”
“As you get more successful, you’re going to become a place and an organization that other teams want to come and hire your folks,” added Penner. “We put a priority on retaining a number of those and Davis Webb was one of those. We are excited about having him in that role and [we] have a lot of confidence in him.”
That’s certainly positive news for the Broncos. I don’t think a coach has ever been successful when making a move because it was forced by the front office.
