The Denver Broncos didn’t “win” the first day of NFL free agency.

But as everyone knows, championships aren’t won on Day 1 of free agency.

There are still plenty of moves to be made around the league. And as we’ve seen in the past, under-the-radar moves that are made late in free agency, or even late in training camp, can often be the moves that put a team over the top.

That’s why a Broncos Super Bowl champion had an apt message for fans Monday night.

Former Broncos wide receiver Bennie Fowler sends message to Denver fans

Former Broncos wide receiver Bennie Fowler, who is famous for catching the final pass of Peyton Manning’s career (a two-point conversion in Super Bowl 50), took to Twitter/X.com to send a message to fans about Denver’s lack of big moves on Monday.

Fowler told Broncos fans to “not crash out” over Denver’s quiet first day of free agency. He also mentioned that fans should “trust” general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton.

I know everyone wants to feel the rush of a big signing as soon as free agency starts — I get it. But that rush is kind of like an impulse purchase — it feels good in the moment, but you don’t really know at the time if it’ll be a good long-term investment.

The same is true of all free agent signings. Many of the deals that were praised on Monday will look terrible in retrospect a year from now. And a lot of the moves that were glossed over will end up being some of the best moves that were made.

Who knows, maybe Denver’s decision to not sign Kenneth Walker III or Travis Etienne to a big contract will end up looking brilliant. Or maybe passing on those two will lead to the Broncos drafting a running back that develops into a franchise running back. You just never know.

It’s far too early to judge any team’s free agent “haul”, which is why I think it’s best to follow Fowler’s advice and avoid the crash out — save that for a Sunday afternoon in October when a couple of plays don’t go Denver’s way.
