The Denver Broncos lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the last seconds of their Week 2 matchup. After the Colts initially missed the winning kick, Denver was flagged, allowing Indianapolis another try, 15 yards closer. Broncos Country was left with a bitter taste in their mouths after the Colts’ kicker drilled the game-winner.

Immediately after the contest, head coach Sean Payton spoke to the media. He kept it short and brief, sharing the same feelings as the fan base after the excruciating last-second defeat.

He’s putting the weight of the loss on his shoulders and the coaching staff, saying he and his staff need to be better.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton offers blunt assessment of Week 2 loss

“It’ll be painful to watch that film, and we’ll get the corrections made,” Payton said. “Starts with me, our staff, but we had a number of opportunities to not be in that position late. Unfortunately, we shot ourselves in the foot too many times.”

Payton spoke about the entire team and how they’ll look at the tape to see where they can learn and grow. The head coach drove home the point that some of the mistakes were self-inflicted, which ultimately made the difference in the matchup.

“We gotta be smarter, can’t spike the ball,” Payton said. “We gotta capitalize on a field goal opportunity. Like I said, it’ll be a bitter taste in our mouth for a little bit, and it’s because we put ourselves in a position to control that game late, and it slipped out of our hands.”

Bo Nix and the offense flashed despite the Week 2 loss

Even with the loss, quarterback Bo Nix and the offense did some things right in the contest. After a sluggish Week 1 performance, the offense was firing on all cylinders. Despite having a turnover, Nix shined in the loss.

Nix finished his day going 22-of-30 with 206 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. His leading receiver was Troy Franklin, who emerged as one of the offense’s top weapons. Franklin finished his day with eight receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown.

It’s an ugly feeling having the victory ripped from the hands of the team at the last second, especially when you consider the bounce-back effort from Nix and the offense. Instead, Denver is 1-1 for the season after some costly mistakes late in the game.

There’s a lot of football left, but losses like these can’t happen. Payton fully understands that and will do whatever he can to make sure the team learns and grows from this and is ready to compete moving forward.
