The Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers are nearly underway in a highly anticipated matchup between two AFC West opponents. The winner of the contest will sit atop the division. Ahead of the game, Denver released its official inactive report, and perhaps the omission from it is the biggest reason for Broncos Country to be excited.

Tight end Nate Adkins is healthy enough to compete and will be seeing the field for the first time in the 2025 season. Head coach Sean Payton has long emphasized the importance of Adkins to the long-term vision of the offense. His blocking prowess should be on full display, despite maybe being on a snap count limit to ease him back into competition.

The rest of the inactives are running back Jaleel McLaughlin, linebacker Que Robinson, tight end Evan Engram, quarterback Sam Ehlinger (emergency third quarterback), tackle Frank Crum, and defensive lineman Sai’vion Jones.

Offense and defense take a blow days before the Chargers matchup

On Saturday, it was announced that linebacker Dre Greenlaw would need to be placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least the next four weeks.

It’s a tough blow for Denver, which had acquired Greenlaw during the offseason. The talented linebacker has a lengthy injury history and suffered a severe quad injury during the offseason that’ll need more time to heal.

Unlike Greenlaw, Engram was able to participate in training camp and the offseason, while also appearing in the preseason. The veteran tight end has been dealing with a host of injuries throughout the early going of the season and will be unable to compete in the Chargers game. Engram is another offseason acquisition with heightened expectations that Denver can’t yet utilize.

Broncos running back J.K. Dobbins will be taking on his former team. Ahead of the matchup, he discussed his hopes for the contest. Needless to say, Dobbins is expecting a big game from himself.

“Hopefully I’ll touch 100 (yards) this week,” Dobbins said.

Payton is 1-4 against John Harbaugh in their lifetime head-to-head matchups, with the Chargers sweeping the series last year. Adkins’ long-awaited return and Dobbins’ chance for revenge against his former team give the Broncos two storylines that could shift momentum in their favor.

How those pieces play out and the impact of quarterback Bo Nix with the offense may decide whether Denver walks away atop the division.
