The biggest move the Denver Broncos made this offseason may have had nothing to do with the players on the roster.

Sure, trading for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and re-signing running back J.K. Dobbins were big moves.

The biggest move, however, that Denver made this offseason may end up being head coach Sean Payton’s decision to hand over play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, who was promoted to offensive coordinator in February.

“It’s still going to be our offense, but I think it’s easier to do as you get older and you look at, ‘How do we win more games?’” said Payton when announcing the move. “… I think it’s going to help our team, and I’ll do everything I can to support him. It’s something that I wouldn’t do if I didn’t think would help.”

“I think it will help us, and certainly I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think it was going to help our team win. You get to a point where you’re focused strictly on improving your team any way you can.”

J.K. Dobbins gives his thoughts on Davis Webb taking over play-calling

Dobbins joined The Insiders on NFL Network this week and shared some thoughts on Webb taking over play-calling duties in 2026.

“I think it’s going to impact me big time,” said Dobbins. “I think Webb is a fantastic play caller, and so is Sean Payton. So with the help of Sean Payton, with Davis Webb, I think it’s going to be even better than last year. I think we’re going to do some things that people won’t expect.”

Dobbins, in general, sounds extremely excited about the Broncos’ offense in 2026. He also sounded confident in that interview that he’ll be able to stay healthy this fall (Dobbins is undoubtedly a Pro-Bowl caliber talent when healthy).

As for Payton giving up play-calling, one big reason he’s making this move seems to be that he realized he’s not as fast on the headset as he used to be.

“The thing that I have to continue that changes as you get older is you still have to be quick,” said Payton during last season’s NFL playoffs (via The Athletic). “Play just ran — next play. When I was younger, we’d run a reverse on the 8-yard line, and I’d think nothing of it. As you get older, you think about all the ramifications. So I have to also remove that. It was said: as you get older, maybe you don’t drive in the rain at night. …I can’t let that happen as a play caller. That’s something that I have to, mentally, make sure it’s quick.”

It’s a big change for Payton and the Broncos, but it’s a change that’s expected to yield positive results for the franchise in 2026.
