The Denver Broncos' 2022 season was supposed to be special.
After rescuing Russell Wilson from the dreariness of Seattle and hiring Nathaniel Hackett away from the Green Bay Packers, the Broncos were expected to compete for the AFC West division title.
Instead, Denver went 5-12, Hackett was fired, and Wilson became the punchline of jokes on morning sports shows.
Fortunately for the Broncos, they're starting (kinda) anew in 2023. Denver hired former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton to replace Hackett. And he's expected to bring out the best in Wilson. The two former Super Bowl winners are hoping to win one together in Denver.
Of course, that won't be easy as the Broncos play in the AFC West, a division that's been dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs for much of the last decade.
It would be an upset if anyone but the Chiefs won the AFC West.
CBS Sports, in fact, is predicting that Kansas City will easily win the division in 2023 with a 14-3 record. They have the Broncos finishing second in the division with a 9-8 record.
The good news for Denver, though, is that CBS Sports also has the Broncos earning a playoff spot via the wildcard.
From CBS Sports: The Broncos and Chargers are a little scary — as long as Denver's flying under the radar going into the season I'll be higher on them. Sean Payton is a massive, massive upgrade over Nathaniel Hackett. It really can't be overstated enough. Someone got mad at me for putting the Raiders in fourth place here … they've finished second three times since 2003 and haven't won the division since 2002, so maybe settle down on demanding I think the Raiders will be great this season.
Making the playoffs would be quite an improvement over last season's disaster. And hey, who knows what could happen if Denver reaches the postseason. Maybe they get hot and go on a run. Crazier things have happened…
