CBS Sports wasn't a big fan of what the Denver Broncos "accomplished" during the first wave of NFL free agency.
The national sports media outlet graded each NFL team's first three days of free agency and the Broncos received an F.
CBS Sports, specifically, didn't like Denver's decision to cut safety Justin Simmons.
From CBS Sports: The Denver Broncos are starting over. They decided they would rather eat $85 million as a dead cap hit than have quarterback Russell Wilson play a single snap on the five-year, $245 million extension they signed him to before he took a snap for the franchise. That decision has a ripple effect over everything else the Broncos do. Denver cut four-time Second-Team All-Pro safety Justin Simmons to save $14.5 million in cap space despite him being an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2023. It will jumpstart the team's rebuild, but kicking a team captain and baller like Simmons, who is still producing, to the curb is a tough look.
Ultimately, the Broncos hands were tied this offseason because of the Russell Wilson decision.
In retrospect, the decision to trade for Wilson and sign him to an extension was a bad move. And it's going to impact the way the franchise operates in the immediate future.
But Denver was right to go ahead and cut their losses and start "rebuilding". Delaying the inevitable would've only pushed the rebuilding phase down the road a couple of years.
It might have been an F this offseason for the Broncos, but the franchise can quickly turn things around over the next couple of offseasons. That's the beautiful thing about the NFL — successful rebuilds can (and do) happen relatively quickly.
