When Dre Greenlaw signed a three-year deal with the Denver Broncos worth $35 million ahead of the 2025 season, the expectation was that he’d return to the level of production he enjoyed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 and 2023.

Instead, Greenlaw battled injuries and was even suspended for a game.

The former Arkansas Razorbacks standout played in just eight games for the Broncos, totaling 43 tackles and one interception.

Dre Greenlaw gets real about his time with the Broncos

Greenlaw recently appeared on Terron Armstead’s “The Set” podcast and he was candid about his season with the Broncos and what went wrong.

The Arkansas native noted that not being healthy prevented him ever finding his groove in Denver.

“For me, it was like, the fact that I’m not healthy,” said Greenlaw. “I don’t feel that twitch or that gear that I felt like I need to have, but obviously I’m out here trying to do everything I can to be on the field. It makes it tough when you pay a guy $11 million and he’s only on the field 50 percent of the time. It made it tough for me. It made it to the point where it kind of makes you not happy.

“Now I’ve got to slowly come in and take reps from somebody else — which the linebackers were playing really, really good at the time. So now I’m just taking reps from this guy. And now it’s like, ‘OK, we’re splitting reps, how are we going to do it?’ One week it’s this, one week it’s that, and it’s like, I’ve never been in that position before. I just wasn’t happy. That’s really what it boiled down to at the end of the day.”

“Everything works out for a reason,” added Greenlaw. “I don’t regret none of it. I’m thankful for it all, for Sean (Payton), and everybody that accepted me into that organization — teammates and all. But, yeah, I’m excited to be a Niner.”

Greenlaw’s time in Denver certainly didn’t go the way anyone expected, but at least he has a good perspective on what went wrong.

Sometimes signings just don’t work out. Signing Greenlaw was a good move on paper, and he obviously wanted it to work out. But staying healthy in the NFL is tough, and Greenlaw just wasn’t able to overcome injuries to the point where he could thrive with the Broncos.
