Prominent national media outlet says the Broncos should target a free agent RB coming off a career year
The Denver Broncos are looking to reload this offseason after coming up just short of the Super Bowl.
The Denver Broncos are looking to reload this offseason after coming up just short of the franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance since 2016.
Denver lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game last weekend, but that loss hasn’t dimmed the Broncos’ confidence.
“I got all the confidence in the world with this team, this organization,” said Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II after the loss to New England. ” Obviously, there’s gonna be some losses. It’s not going be the same team. That’s the devastating part about it, but this is not the last time we’re gonna be here. We just going keep on building and rebuilding and getting better.”
PFF says the Broncos should sign running back Rico Dowdle
One need the Broncos will have this offseason is at the running back position.
Running back JK Dobbins is set to be a free agent in March. A reunion with Dobbins could make sense, but given his injury history (27 missed games over the last three seasons), the Broncos may choose to look elsewhere.
PFF’s Ryan Smith suggested Thursday that Denver sign free agent running back Rico Dowdle this offseason.
“JK Dobbins is a pending free agent, and the Broncos struggled to run the ball at times this season despite having a top offensive line,” wrote Smith. “Adding Rico Dowdle would allow RJ Harvey to stay fresh for third downs and allow the team to best utilize his skill set in a two-headed committee.
“Dowdle has been one of the better running backs in the NFL over the last two seasons, forcing 79 missed tackles and averaging 3.21 yards after contact per attempt over that span. The duo of Harvey and Dowdle would be an attempt to replicate Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara from head coach Sean Payton’s New Orleans Saints days.”
Dowdle spent the first five seasons of his career with the Dallas Cowboys before signing with the Carolina Panthers ahead of the 2025 season.
The former South Carolina Gamecocks standout rushed for 1,076 yards and six touchdowns in 2025 while splitting carries with Chuba Hubbard. Dowdle also caught 39 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown.
Dowdle is not expected to return to the Panthers after his time in Charlotte ended on a sour note.
