Shortly after beating the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced that quarterback Bo Nix had suffered a broken ankle and will be done for the remainder of the year. Payton mentioned that the injury occurred on the second-to-last play in overtime. That means backup Jarrett Stidham is now the starter. He will take on either the New England Patriots or the Houston Texans—whoever wins on Sunday.

He’s been ready for this, dating all the way back to last season’s training camp when he lost the battle for the starting spot to a rookie Nix.

“First of all, obviously, I was very disappointed,” Stidham said of not winning the starting gig. “I know I’m a starting quarterback in this league. I have no doubts about that, and it just didn’t shake out my way. I know what kind of player I am, what kind of person I am. As I said earlier, I’ll be ready to go if I need to be. As I said, I have no doubts that I’m a starting-caliber quarterback in this league.”

“I think they know what I can do,” he said. “I think I displayed that last year whenever I was asked to come in and play the last two games, throughout practice, throughout training camp, OTAs, the whole thing. At the end of the day, I’m going to go out there and do what I do. I’m confident in what I can do, and I’ll do whatever I can to help this team.”

Stidham gets to try to cement his legacy in Broncos lore

It’s safe to say that no one has the Broncos winning the Super Bowl now. That’s completely fair, as they’ve lost their engine to their team. However, just because no one thinks they can win it doesn’t mean they won’t. Stidham isn’t just some scrub. He’s played some ball games in this league and has played some very good football when his number has been called.

A win in the AFC Championship is not impossible, and the Broncos believe in him.

“Stiddy’s ready. And we’ll be ready,” Payton said after the game.

This is Stidham’s chance to prove everyone wrong.
