Broncos HC Sean Payton says exactly what needs to be said regarding QB Bo Nix and his play vs. the Bills
Bo Nix was awesome against the Bills.
The Denver Broncos are going to have the odds stacked against them moving forward this postseason. Let’s face it: No one was really pulling for them as a team that could win it all anyway, other than fans of the Broncos and anyone who has anything to do with that franchise. And now, quarterback Bo Nix will be out for the remainder of the season, as he broke a bone in his ankle on the second-to-last play of the game.
After their win against the Buffalo Bills, the Broncos still walked away with a loss in another sense. With Nix’s injury, they will definitely have everything going against them. Just to add to the pain for Denver, Nix was playing some of his best football.
“Yes, he was fantastic when we needed him, and he made some plays with his feet,” head coach Sean Payton said after the game. “Both teams were nicked up. They were nicked up coming in, and we got nicked up quick. [WR] Pat [Bryant] is out, and then pretty soon [WR] Troy Franklin’s out, and then you’re down to three receivers.”
Nix did what was needed to win, nothing more, nothing less
There were times that Nix made some plays that really made you get out of your seat. However, those plays were likely due to the magnitude of the play, like a big third-down conversion in which he scrambled with his legs. You didn’t often get the hoopla about what Nix was doing because he just made some unbelievable plays with his arm. That’s just not the type of player he is, at least not yet. He will have a few plays here and there, but he mostly just makes the correct play to win.
Nix is a winner, so he’s going to do what it takes to win rather than be flashy and make the constant highlight play. When the Broncos needed it most, he got the ball down the field, and that’s all that matters.
“Man, those were big drives. Not always easy,” Payton said. “Once we hit midfield with the penalty, now we know we’re getting zero on every play. I wasn’t comfortable with where we were kicking that field goal from at all. We usually keep a list of six to eight passes: zero beaters, max protection, stutter spears, and he puts it up there for [WR Marvin] Mims [Jr.].”
There were a few throws in the red zone that were just incredible by Nix, even if the receiver didn’t catch them. He’s a playoff game winner now, where last year he and the Broncos just weren”t ready. Let’s see if Jarrett Stidham, the Broncos’ backup, can do the same.
